I love this small collection of photographs.. Its amazing how an image so simple and everyday can stir up so many memories, thoughts and desires, sort of like a domino effect. It reminds me of an idyllic period of my childhood, a vague hazy memory, made up of various images like the photos I’ve shown. I can however, distinctly remember the way I felt, complete bliss! I can almost feel the sun on my face again and I can hear laughter. The air is filled with the scent of pollen and fresh bread. There’s a farmhouse nearby behind huge old oaks hung with the occasional rope swing. I’m with someone, a friend and we’re playing in the field, our heads barely reaching over the long golden barley. It is a feeling I yearn for again, a desire, an ultimate goal, and I find myself wondering if it’s a realistic goal. Is it possible to feel as carefree and happy as we did during childhood? Can we achieve that simplicity and innocence again?
Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water rats;
There we’ve hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.
This is a verse from ‘The Stolen Child’ possibly my favourite poem in the world! There is something in those words that stirs the soul that, in a subtle, curious way grabs the attention of our minds eye. The imagery plants a seed in our imagination and creates the sense the happening captured in those words belongs to us, something that happened to us in our past, a dark and enchanting adventure we ourselves experienced. In the last line you can almost hear them calling, beckoning to come with them. There are times when we all wish to fall into their world, escape our dull grey lives of order and repetition, disappear into the mysterious, unknown world of the fairy people, and discover a new and enchanted life we never knew we could lead. I think it is breath taking.
I’m new to all this so any advice will be gratefully accepted! Basically this is a blog in which I hope to express another side of myself through art poetry and mythology. I have a strong interest in the occult which influences my tastes, and I have a deep interest in the legends and tales that have been lost in the passages of time and unearthed in the recent past. I live in a small village in Ireland and I’ve grown up with these stories and I suppose my fascination in them has just carried on into adulthood!! Would love to hear from you all!
